About the Detroit Masonic Temple

The Masonic Temple is located in Detroit's historic Cass Corridor, and it’s one of the city's most recognizable landmarks. It was completed in 1926, and the building celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2026. It’s also known as being the largest Masonic Temple in the world. With more than 1,000 rooms, intricate architectural details, and stunning spaces for ceremonies and receptions, it's an iconic setting for couples dreaming of a grand wedding.

Having photographed a wedding here myself, I can confidently say it's one of the most inspiring venues I've worked in. From the elegance of the Crystal Ballroom to the dramatic interiors of the Chapel, there's truly no shortage of beautiful backdrops for portraits. For couples who appreciate historic architecture and thoughtful details, the Masonic Temple has so much to offer.

A Look Inside the Detroit Masonic Temple Wedding Venue

One of the things I love about the Detroit Masonic Temple is how many beautiful spaces it offers for a wedding. Whether you're getting ready on-site, planning a ceremony surrounded by historic architecture or a grand ballroom reception with hundreds of your favorite people, there are many options to make the day feel like your own.

Getting Ready at the Detroit Masonic Temple

One of the benefits of hosting your wedding at the Detroit Masonic Temple is having beautiful spaces available for getting ready right on-site. The bridal suite is stunning, and even the foyer just outside has beautiful opportunities for portraits before the wedding begins.

One thing I would encourage couples to consider is adding extra time for getting ready at the venue. The Masonic Temple charges an additional fee for earlier access, but having that extra time can make such a difference in how your morning unfolds. Between hair and makeup, getting dressed, and taking portraits, the morning can go by much faster than you expect.

If you're planning to get ready here, I recommend discussing early access with the venue and working closely with your photographer and planner to create a timeline that gives you plenty of breathing room. With a building this beautiful, you'll want time to enjoy it without feeling rushed.

For a better idea of how to plan your morning and the rest of your wedding, take a look at my sample Masonic Temple wedding timeline.

The Chapel

The Chapel is one of the most inspiring spaces inside the Detroit Masonic Temple. It was inspired by Westminster Abbey, and it features gorgeous architectural details and a historic atmosphere that feels so fitting for a wedding ceremony.

The Chapel accommodates up to 400 guests, making it possible to host a large ceremony without leaving the building.

Although Maria and Chris held their ceremony at their home parish, we were able to use the Chapel for portraits afterward. I absolutely loved photographing them here, especially with the rich red velvet curtains. There are so many interesting details and backdrops throughout the space, and it's somewhere I would happily spend even more time photographing in the future.

The Crystal Ballroom

The Crystal Ballroom is where I photographed Maria and Chris's wedding reception, and it's easily one of my favorite spaces in the building. It has gorgeous Italian-inspired architecture and details, an upper-level balcony, and overall an elegance that makes an impression without needing much added decoration.

As a Detroit wedding photographer who loves working with ambient lighting, I appreciate how beautifully the room photographs when lit up by candles and chandeliers. The ambient light creates a warm, inviting atmosphere. Flash photography brings out an entirely different look once the open dance floor begins.

Something else that stood out to me was how attentive the venue staff was throughout the reception. From keeping the ballroom clean after dinner to helping guests transition smoothly between spaces, their attention to detail made such a difference.

The Crystal Ballroom accommodates up to 350 guests for a wedding reception with a dance floor, making it a great choice for couples who love the idea of a grand wedding reception in an elegant, historic setting.

The Fountain Ballroom

For couples planning an even bigger wedding, the Fountain Ballroom is another stunning option. The space is approximately 16,640 square feet, and it's the larger of the Masonic Temple's two main ballrooms, with an open layout that allows for flexible seating and event designs.

The Fountain Ballroom can accommodate up to 550 wedding guests with a dance floor, making it a great choice for couples with an extensive guest list who still want plenty of room for dinner and dancing.

The Outdoor Cigar Bar Alley

For guests looking to step outside during the reception, the Masonic Temple also has an outdoor cigar bar alley. It's a fun change of scenery from the ballrooms, and has a more relaxed atmosphere for guests to mingle and enjoy a little fresh air. During Maria and Chris's wedding, I loved seeing guests gather in this space beneath the string lights. It's another little detail that adds to the overall experience of celebrating here.

How Much Does a Masonic Temple Wedding Cost?

The cost of a Masonic Temple wedding in Detroit depends on several factors, including your wedding date, guest count, ballroom selection, and food and beverage choices. For couples considering the Crystal Ballroom, the venue currently lists the following minimums for weddings held between April and December:

  • Saturday weddings: $25,000 minimum

  • Friday weddings: $15,000 minimum

  • Sunday weddings: Some discounted menu pricing may be available.

  • Fountain Ballroom weddings: Minimums vary based on the event.

Keep in mind that these are minimum spending requirements, not necessarily the final cost of your wedding. Your total investment will depend on your selections, additional services, upgrades, and outside vendors.

Masonic Temple Wedding Menus & Catering

The Masonic Temple offers on-site catering, with food prepared right at the venue. Couples can choose from different food and beverage options to find what works best for their guest count and vision for the day.

Outside catering is also permitted through licensed and insured companies, although an additional buyout fee applies. The venue offers tastings after a contract has been signed.

For the most accurate information about wedding packages, menus, and current pricing, I recommend reviewing the Masonic Temple's official wedding information and contacting their events team for a personalized quote.

*Pricing information is accurate as of October 2026 and is subject to change. I recommend contacting the Detroit Masonic Temple directly for the most current wedding pricing, packages, and availability.

The Best Masonic Temple Wedding Photography Locations

If there's one thing I learned from photographing a wedding at the Detroit Masonic Temple, it's that you could spend an entire day exploring this building and still find new places for portraits. With the historic architecture, rich textures, beautiful natural light, and countless unique spaces, it's truly a photographer's dream.

One of the things I loved about photographing Maria and Chris's wedding was having access to so many different areas of the building. The Masonic Temple allows photography throughout the venue (except for on the roof), as long as there are no events taking place in those spaces and your requests have been approved by the event manager. I recommend discussing your preferred portrait locations with the venue (and your photographer) ahead of time so you can plan accordingly.

Here are a few of my favorite spots for wedding portraits inside and around the Detroit Masonic Temple.

The Chapel

The Chapel was easily one of my favorite places to photograph Maria and Chris. Although they held their ceremony at their home parish, we took advantage of this stunning space for portraits, especially in front of the rich red velvet curtains. The architecture and all the little details throughout the room gave us so many opportunities to get creative here. It's a space I would happily spend even more time photographing.

The Crystal Ballroom Balcony

The upper-level balcony in the Crystal Ballroom gives an entirely different perspective of the reception space. I love having the opportunity to photograph couples from above, especially when the ballroom is beautifully decorated and ready for guests. It's also a great way to capture the scale of the room and all the thoughtful details you spent time choosing and that went into bringing the wedding together.

The Bridal Suite & Foyer

The bridal suite is beautiful for more than just getting ready. I love incorporating these spaces into wedding portraits, especially when couples want a few quiet moments together before the day really picks up. The foyer just outside the suite is another favorite of mine, giving even more variety without having to travel far between locations.

The Side Entry Lobby

One of the more unique portrait locations inside the Masonic Temple is the side entry lobby. It has red leather couches, rich velvet curtains, and contrasting white drapery, this space has so much personality. I especially love it for couples who appreciate an editorial feel to their wedding photos while still wanting their images to feel natural and true to them.

The Elevators

Even the elevators at the Detroit Masonic Temple give opportunity for unique wedding portraits. I love finding little pockets of the venue that might otherwise get overlooked, and elevator photos can be such a fun way to add variety to your gallery. Whether it's more intimate or something a little more playful, these are the kinds of locations I love incorporating into a wedding day.

The Exterior Steps

Of course, we can't leave out the exterior of the Masonic Temple. The grand stone steps and historic architecture make a beautiful backdrop for wedding portraits. It's also a great opportunity to incorporate the building itself into your gallery, especially when you've chosen a venue with this much history and character.

Getting Married at the Detroit Masonic Temple?

Planning Your Masonic Temple Wedding: Tips From a Detroit Wedding Photographer

A wedding at the Detroit Masonic Temple is such a great opportunity to bring together all the people you love for a beautiful celebration. But with a venue this grand, having a plan and a team you trust makes all the difference. After photographing Maria and Chris's wedding here, there are a few things I would encourage couples to consider when planning their own day.

Give Yourself Plenty of Time in Your Wedding Timeline

If you're planning a Masonic Temple wedding, I recommend starting with at least 10 hours of wedding photography coverage. Between getting ready, portraits throughout the building, your ceremony, and the reception, there's so much to document, and I never want my couples to feel like they're rushing from one part of the day to the next.

I also recommend considering the venue's early-access option if you're planning to get ready on-site. Having that additional time in the morning can make a noticeable difference, especially when coordinating hair and makeup, getting dressed, and portraits before the ceremony.

To see how I approach a full wedding day here, I've included a sample 10-hour Masonic Temple wedding timeline below.

Sample Detroit Masonic Temple Wedding Timeline

To give you a better idea of how a wedding day at the Masonic Temple can unfold, I've put together an example based on a real wedding I photographed here. This timeline includes getting ready at Masonic Temple, a ceremony at a separate church, portraits throughout the Masonic Temple, and a reception in the Crystal Ballroom.

When creating timelines for my couples, I consider much more than the start and end times of each event. I'm also looking at how long it takes to travel between locations, when the sun sets, which moments need coverage from a second photographer, and where we can build in enough flexibility to enjoy the day.

For a venue as grand as the Masonic Temple, having those details mapped out ahead of time makes a big difference in how smoothly the day unfolds.

Need more wedding timeline inspiration? Every wedding day looks a little different. If you're still figuring out how to structure yours, I've put together additional wedding timeline examples to help you get started below.

Consider Having a Second Wedding Photographer

For weddings on this scale, having a second photographer is something I strongly recommend. With so many important moments happening throughout the day, it's not always possible for one photographer to be everywhere at once.

For example, during Maria and Chris's wedding, my second photographer was able to capture cocktail hour while I stayed at their home parish for family portraits. Having that additional coverage meant we could document both parts of their wedding without sacrificing either.

It's one of those decisions that can make such a difference in how completely your wedding day is documented.

Surround Yourself With an Experienced Vendor Team

One of my biggest recommendations for couples getting married at the Masonic Temple is to invest in a strong team of wedding professionals, particularly an experienced wedding planner or coordinator.

With larger weddings, there are more moving parts to consider, from coordinating vendors and managing transitions between spaces to keeping everything running smoothly throughout the day. And even with the most thoughtfully planned timeline, unexpected delays can happen.

Having people you trust who can adjust when needed, communicate with one another, and handle those behind-the-scenes details allows you to stay present and enjoy your wedding. The Masonic Temple's staff was wonderful to work with during Maria and Chris's wedding, and pairing that with a dependable team of your own can make the experience even better.

Parking, Accessibility & Guest Experience at the Detroit Masonic Temple

When planning a wedding at the Detroit Masonic Temple, there are a few logistical details worth considering to help your guests have a comfortable and enjoyable experience. From parking to accessibility, here's what I recommend knowing ahead of time.

Parking at the Detroit Masonic Temple

The Detroit Masonic Temple doesn't offer dedicated guest parking or valet services, but there are several paid parking lots and garages throughout The District Detroit, along with metered street parking nearby.

One little bonus for couples planning a Sunday wedding is that Detroit's metered street parking is free on Sundays. Of course, parking availability and posted restrictions still apply.

Something I also recommend checking is the Little Caesars Arena event schedule. Because the arena is so close to the Masonic Temple, concerts, sporting events, and other major events can affect nearby parking availability and traffic. Giving your guests a heads-up about parking options before the wedding can make their arrival much easier.

Accessibility at the Masonic Temple

Although the Masonic Temple is a historic building, there are accessible entrances and elevators available for guests who need them.

The venue's designated accessible entrance is located at the corner of 2nd Avenue and Temple Street, where a ramp provides access to the building. Since not every entrance is accessible, I recommend confirming the best entry point with the venue ahead of time, especially if you'll have guests with mobility considerations.

Accessible parking is also available in nearby paid garages and lots. For additional accommodations, you can contact the Masonic Temple directly at boxoffice@themasonic.com.

Weather Considerations for Your Wedding Day

One of the biggest advantages of getting married at the Detroit Masonic Temple is that nearly your entire wedding can take place indoors. From getting ready and portraits to your ceremony and reception, you have beautiful indoor spaces available without needing to rely on good weather. The outdoor cigar bar alley is an exception, so it's worth keeping the weather in mind if you plan to incorporate that space.

As a Detroit wedding photographer, I always appreciate having indoor portrait options, especially with how unpredictable Michigan weather can be. While I love incorporating the exterior steps into wedding portraits when possible, there's certainly no shortage of beautiful locations inside the building if the weather doesn't cooperate.

Maria & Chris's Wedding at the Detroit Masonic Temple

Maria and Chris's wedding was such a beautiful example of what makes weddings at the Detroit Masonic Temple so special. They held their ceremony at their home parish before making their way to the Masonic Temple for an elegant reception in the Crystal Ballroom. It has such grand architecture and beautiful natural light, and the space was the perfect setting for a wedding that felt both sophisticated and welcoming.

One of my favorite parts of their day was having the opportunity to take advantage of so many different areas of the Masonic Temple for portraits. Like the red velvet curtains in the Chapel to the beautiful interiors throughout the building, there was no shortage of inspiration.

And while I photographed their family portraits back at the church, my second photographer captured cocktail hour at the Masonic Temple. It was such a great reminder of how valuable having a trusted photography team can be for a wedding with multiple locations and so many meaningful moments to document. A wedding of this scale takes an incredible team of talented wedding professionals, and Maria and Chris had just that. I'm so grateful to have worked alongside everyone who helped bring their beautiful day together.

After their wedding, Maria and Chris both shared such thoughtful Google reviews about their experience. I'm incredibly grateful for their kind words and the trust they placed in me to document their day.
