Surprise Ann Arbor Engagement Photos | Susy + Ethan

A PRIVATE, INTENTIONAL PROPOSAL FOR COUPLES PLANNING ANN ARBOR ENGAGEMENT PHOTOS

When couples start searching for Ann Arbor engagement photos, they’re often looking for a beautiful location.

But the couples who end up with the most meaningful images usually choose something deeper than that — a place that already holds weight in their relationship.

For Susy and Ethan, that place was Nichols Arboretum Ann Arbor.

WHY NICHOLS ARBORETUM ANN ARBOR WAS THE RIGHT CHOICE

Nichols Arboretum wasn’t just a scenic backdrop for them — it was somewhere they already returned to together.

Quiet walks. Time away from everything else. A place that felt calm and familiar.

So when Ethan began planning his proposal, the decision wasn’t about finding somewhere impressive. It was about choosing somewhere that already meant something — and making that moment even more intentional.

A HIDDEN CLEARING, A PRIVATE PICNIC, AND A PROPOSAL THAT FELT LIKE THEM

Ethan reached out about two months before the proposal to plan everything out in advance — timing, location, and how to keep the moment completely private.

The final plan led them on a walk through the Arboretum, eventually opening into a quiet clearing surrounded by trees. At the center sat a simple, modern canopy structure — creating a sense of shelter and focus within the open space.

Beneath it was a picnic already set and waiting.

A blanket laid out with a basket, a thermos of hot tea for the cold March afternoon, candles surrounding the space, and two mugs monogrammed with their initials.

As they stepped onto the blanket, Ethan handed Susy a pair of headphones.

Together, they listened to a song he had written and recorded just for her.

From a distance — hidden behind a line of pine trees and photographing with a long lens — I captured the moment as it unfolded naturally, without interruption.

When the song ended, he got down on one knee right there on the blanket.

Susy immediately pulled him into a hug, kissed him, and then held onto him again — fully in it, fully present, and completely unaware of anything else around them.

DOCUMENTING THE MOMENT WITHOUT INTERRUPTING IT

One of the most important parts of a proposal like this is preserving the moment without changing it.

By staying hidden across the clearing, I was able to give them space to experience everything as it was meant to happen — just the two of them, uninterrupted.

After the proposal, I intentionally stayed back for a few minutes to let them feel the emotion of the moment.

When they were ready, Ethan gestured out toward the clearing — and that was my cue to pop out from behind the tree and congratulate them.

WHEN THE RAIN CHANGES THE PLAN — AND MAKES IT BETTER

The original plan after the proposal was to head into downtown Ann Arbor for portraits in the Law Quad and outside of the restaurant they had dinner reservations for..

But March in Michigan had other plans.

A steady drizzle moved in, so we shifted to their backup plan — photographing inside the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA).

And in many ways, it elevated the entire experience.

The museum brought in a completely different atmosphere — classic architecture, soft light, and a quiet, refined environment that allowed them to stay grounded in the moment instead of rushing between locations.

It’s a reminder that a well-thought-out rain plan doesn’t just save the day — it can enhance it.

WHAT MAKES THIS PROPOSAL STAND OUT

There are a lot of beautiful proposals. But this one felt different for a few reasons:

  • Ethan wrote and recorded a song just for Susy

  • The location was already meaningful to them

  • The setting was intentionally private and calm

  • Every detail, from the picnic to the timing,  was thought through ahead of time

Nothing about it felt rushed or performative.

It felt like them.

DO YOU NEED A PERMIT FOR NICHOLS ARBORETUM OR UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN MUSEUM OF ART?

One of the biggest advantages of planning Ann Arbor engagement photos at Nichols Arboretum or UMMA is accessibility.

  • No permit or reservation is typically required

As your engagement photographer, I always double-check a location’s policies before your session to ensure their policies have not changed and everything is up to date.

THE KIND OF EXPERIENCE THIS CREATES

Susy and Ethan’s proposal wasn’t built around a performance. It was built around presence.

A quiet walk. A meaningful place. A moment that unfolded naturally and was preserved without interruption.

The kind of experience that doesn’t just live on your phone — but becomes something you display on your walls, hold in your mind, and return to for years.
